So recently I watched Motu Patlu Deep Sea Adventure movie. Well, this movie surprised me. I had actually reviewed this movie earlier on this blog based on a different version of the story and my experience at that time was fairly average. But watching it again more carefully I noticed a lot of things I had missed before. The story is actually more layered than it first appears and the underwater world is genuinely well built out for a Motu Patlu movie.
What starts as a simple business idea from Motu and Patlu quickly turns into a full scale underwater adventure with magical sea kingdoms, shark armies, oppressed mermaids, ancient ocean magic and a villain who has been manipulating an entire kingdom from behind the scenes for years. That is a lot more going on than a typical Motu Patlu episode. Let me walk you through the whole thing properly this time.

Motu Patlu Deep Sea Adventure released on 19 May 2014 on Nickelodeon India. It is the third animated television movie in the Motu Patlu franchise. The movie was produced by Deepa Sahi and Anish J.S. Mehta and directed by Suhas D. Kadav. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Niraj Vikram. Created by Maya Digital Studios and Cosmos Entertainment in association with Viacom18. Runtime of the movie is approximately 75 minutes.
Saurav Chakraborty voices practically everyone in this movie like Motu, Patlu, Dr. Jhatka, Ghasitaram, Inspector Chingum, John the Don, Boxer and several other characters. That is honestly an impressive range for one voice artist and his performances continue to be one of the biggest reasons why Motu Patlu movies are so enjoyable to watch.
Ratings of the Movie
The IMDb rating is 6.0 out of 10 which looks low. But I genuinely think this movie deserves better than that score. The story has more depth than most people give it credit for and the underwater world is one of the more creative settings in the entire Motu Patlu franchise. The rating probably reflects viewers who expected a simpler experience and were not expecting this much going on under the surface. No pun intended.
What Actually Happens in the Movie?
The movie opens in Furfuri Nagar where Motu and Patlu have come up with their latest big idea. They want to start a luxury cruise travel company. They invest in a brand new cruise ship, organize their very first ocean voyage and Motu is already imagining himself as a millionaire. Things seem to be going well for about five minutes before the ship sails straight into a massive mysterious marine whirlwind. The storm destroys the ship completely and drags everyone into the depths of the ocean.
Somehow they do not drown. They wake up trapped inside a giant protective air bubble resting on the ocean floor. A friendly magical shark shows up and gives them advanced scuba suits so they can breathe and move underwater properly. Things seem to be improving. Then a shark named Sharkuni appears, captures the whole group and takes them directly to the underwater kingdom ruled by the powerful King Sharkaal.
At first Sharkaal seems like the main villain. He presents himself as the supreme ruler of the oceans, demands respect from everyone around him and lives a life of luxury and royal celebrations. But as Motu and Patlu spend more time in the kingdom they start realizing something is not quite right.
The real power behind the throne is not Sharkaal at all. Sharkuni has been secretly manipulating the kingdom for years. He pretends to be a loyal advisor but he is actually an ancient sea wizard with ambitions of ruling the entire ocean himself. Everything Sharkaal believes about how his kingdom works has been shaped by Sharkuni’s lies and deceptions.
One of the most interesting things the heroes discover is the treatment of the mermaids. Sharkuni has convinced Sharkaal that mermaids are inferior beings. Because of this they have been treated as slaves for years. This storyline gives the movie a real conflict beyond the usual comedy and actually makes you care about what happens to the kingdom.
While trying to figure all of this out Motu and Patlu face aggressive shark guards, dangerous magical attacks from Sharkuni’s enchanted staff and the general challenge of trying to survive and navigate a completely unfamiliar underwater world. The movie also takes them through some genuinely memorable locations including the magnificent coral built Imperial Palace and the hidden underwater realm where the mermaids actually live.
John the Don also ends up underwater after the shipwreck and spends most of the movie trying to exploit the chaos for his own benefit. As usual his plans fail in funny ways and he provides a lot of the comedy in the middle section.
One scene I particularly enjoyed is a giant rampaging octopus that crashes King Sharkaal’s extravagant birthday celebration and causes absolute chaos throughout the whole kingdom. It is one of the funniest and most visually entertaining sequences in the movie.
Eventually Sharkuni stops hiding. He drops his loyal advisor disguise completely, openly rebels against Sharkaal and reveals that he has been manipulating him the whole time. Then he transforms into his true form which is a gigantic mermaid octopus hybrid with enormous magical powers. That transformation is genuinely impressive visually and it raises the stakes dramatically for the final act.
This is the moment when Sharkaal finally understands how badly he has been deceived. His own wife Queen Shaaruna and his son Sharky refuse to support Sharkuni and after Motu and Patlu rescue young Sharky the king starts questioning everything he believed about his own kingdom.
Sharkuni turns out to be too powerful to defeat through normal means. Even Motu’s samosa powered strength is not enough against a sea wizard of that level. The heroes eventually figure out that Sharkuni’s entire power comes from his magical staff. This triggers a massive underwater uprising where the mermaids, various sea creatures and the heroes all unite against him. After a large scale battle Sharkuni is separated from his staff and loses most of his power. The final blow comes when the legendary Mermaid King’s Sword is used to destroy his dark magic completely.
In a fittingly funny ending the defeated Sharkuni is carried away toward a gathering of hungry sea predators. Peace returns to the kingdom. The mermaids are freed. Sharkaal reforms his ways and starts rebuilding the ocean realm properly. And the grateful Mermaid King, Princess Merdeena and the reformed Sharkaal use their resources and magic to guide Motu, Patlu and all their friends safely back to the surface and home to Furfuri Nagar.
What I Felt While Watching this Movie?
The thing that genuinely impressed me this time around is how much story the movie manages to pack into 75 minutes. There is a hidden manipulation storyline, a social oppression storyline with the mermaids, a villain redemption arc with Sharkaal and a proper final boss battle with Sharkuni. For a Motu Patlu movie that is a lot of moving parts and for the most part they all work together reasonably well.
Sharkuni is one of the better constructed villains in this franchise. The fact that he spent years pretending to be loyal while secretly running everything from the shadows makes him feel genuinely clever and threatening. Most Motu Patlu villains are straightforward. Sharkuni has actual layers.
Sharkaal also surprised me. He starts off looking like the main villain but turns out to be a victim of manipulation who eventually chooses to do the right thing. His redemption arc is simple but it works and it adds emotional weight to the ending.
The mermaid storyline is the most meaningful element in the whole movie. It is not just a side plot. It is the reason Motu and Patlu decide to fight back properly instead of just trying to escape and go home.
My only complaint is the pacing in certain sections. The movie moves very quickly through some of the underwater locations and supporting characters that deserved more time. The Mermaid King and Princess Merdeena for example appear quite late and feel slightly rushed.
But overall this is a much better movie than its 6.0 IMDb rating suggests. Give it a proper chance and you will find more here than you expect.
Should You Watch this Movie?
Yes absolutely. Especially if you want something different from the usual Motu Patlu treasure hunts, space missions or island adventures. The underwater setting, the hidden manipulation storyline and the mermaid liberation arc all make this one stand apart from most other entries in the franchise.
For kids it is a very entertaining watch with colorful sea visuals, funny moments from John the Don and Kalia and exciting action in the final battle. For older viewers the Sharkuni and Sharkaal storyline has enough depth to keep you genuinely interested.
Out of the Motu Patlu movies I have reviewed on this blog so far I would place this one in the middle tier. Not as strong as Kung Fu Kings or Kung Fu King Returns but definitely more interesting than my initial impression suggested. It is worth a revisit if you watched it once and did not think much of it. Motu Patlu Deep Sea Adventure is a genuinely creative and ambitious movie that takes the franchise into a completely different environment and actually does interesting things with it. The hidden villain, the mermaid oppression storyline, Sharkaal’s redemption and the large scale final battle all come together to make something more meaningful than the average Motu Patlu movie. It moves a bit quickly in places and some characters deserved more time but overall it is a fun and memorable underwater adventure.
